Needle Leaf Bottlebrush (Callistemon)

If you want hummingbirds, plant a bottlebrush. The needle leaf throws vivid red flower spikes through spring and summer, and the hummingbirds come back to them again and again. It is evergreen underneath the show and built for a foothill summer.

Plant in full sun for the most bloom. Water through the first season to set the roots, then ease off. This one is made for dry ground. A light prune after flowering keeps it shapely and brings on more spikes.
